When we got to the Oaisis, the few sprinkles we had on the way down the steep slopes of the canyon began to look more like real rain. We took shelter under some very thick palm fronds.

As you can see from the clothes, we had anticipated that it might rain. Not letting that ruin a good hike! Somehow we all had just enough waterproofing to stay dry. On the hike out, two black masses of clouds were headed straight for each other, looking like they would collide and dump rain like crazy, exactly in the direction we were hiking towards. This is indeed exactly what happened, but we were back at the parking lot just before serious rain came down.
Avin, in the left of the picture, is a real inspiration for staying in shape. He was 81 years old and still able to do this kind of hiking, 7.5 miles round trip. When he was in his twenties though, during the great depression, he worked in the Grand Canyon, and held the record for running down one side and up the other.
